Unique and Famous Golden Grass ( Kaincha) Crafts Of Odisha

A kind of rich yellowish assortment of wild grass, is called Golden Grass because of its brilliant gloss on drying. This is abundantly available in coastal areas of Odisha particularly in kendrapara and Jagatsinghpur districts and it is locally known as ‘Kaincha’ .
This is a unique and notable resource of the coastal districts. It is tall and thin grass whose top is golden in colour. This grass is commonly found in the river bed particularly in the months of Bhadrab & Ashwin ( August, September & October) . It is used as a raw material for making several traditional crafts like mats , baskets etc. These traditional crafts are very much sustainable and eco friendly in nature.
The yellow and brilliant dried grass, creatively split and woven to make superb art things like grass mats, modest crates, dining table mats, liners, trinket boxes, wall decoration and caps etc.Now-a-days, Kaincha craft has caught widespread attention around the world…..Only the sky is the limit and greater city inhabitants are finding the excellence of its items as they are eco-accommodating, biodegradable and diminish the utilization of plastic. Here I am giving few photos of Kaincha crafts ( both decorative and utility) .You can also have a look on the varieties of mesmerising burnt clay crafts , horn works and mind-blowing wood sculptures of Odisha through the following links.
Conclusion:
Golden Grass or Kaincha is a unique combination of nature friendliness and elegance. The use and appreciation of hand-made items in Golden Grass ( Kaincha) should be increased. In this context, some suggestions coming to my mind.
- Hand-woven sarees (more than 10 thousand rupees) available in the “Bayanika” should be handed over to the customers in a Kaincha or golden grass box.
- The state govt art emporium ( Utkalika ) should deliver silver filigree items in a golden grass or Kaincha box .
3. Let golden grass artisans venture in to making new golden grass items.
4. Let an exclusive shop for only golden grass items open in Bhubaneswar.
5. Increase the appreciation of golden grass exclusive shop and table mats. Let Kaincha trays be used for bread baskets in hotels.
Let Kaincha or golden grass made items be one of the symbols of Odisha’s identity.
